- We will not be having class 10/17
- Read Stage 4 writing stage
- Drop off your final draft of your stage 3 writing assignment in my box in the ARHU building (English Dept. 2nd Floor)
I want everyone to start thinking about a theory of reading and writing. This might be the most difficult thing you will have to do this semester so I am allowing you some time to think and investigate this on your own. I want you to start gathering information about questions you have (see stage 4). This will be geared at an introspective and personal idea/theory about reading and writing that you will generate through research.
Assignment:
- Post a half page abstract by Friday 10/18 on this blog. (2 citations required)
- Tell me what your thinking about writing about, start generating a theory you would like to examine
- I will not be giving you writing prompts for this assignment, as this will solely be up to you.
- Please post on the blog if you have any questions
Do we turn the stage 3 at any time, or is there an specific time? And about the stage 4, do you want us to write about writing and reading or what?
ReplyDeleteMake sure to read stage 4 completely Jennifer. Look at the questions it's asking you to ask in order for you to form a theory about reading and writing.
Delete^ same question here
ReplyDeleteand are we still going to meet or we change to another day for the people that have not meet with you about portfolios?
Stage 3 is due by 3pm. I will be picking up the papers in my box in ARHU building 2nd Floor English Dept. We are not meeting. I will look at the portfolios next week.
ReplyDeleteAs in this blog, you mean right here as a comment?
ReplyDeleteYes on here Luis.
DeleteTo develop my theory of writing, reading and learning I would like to talk about college and my question would be, what do students expect from college?; I would like to talk about this topic because I just came here and I didn’t know what to expect, I have been in college but in Monterrey, I went to “Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon” but I didn’t thought that it would be the same here as it was on Monterrey, and I was right. I decided to come to Panam because my cousin just graduated from here and he got a nice, wealthy job and he was telling me that I needed to take the opportunity that I have to live and study here without problems; He said that college was easy here so I was confident but when I got here y realized that you need to dedicate a lot of time to college, not as UANL, over there you just need to apply yourself when you have your tests; This and some other things is why I would like to talk about this.

ReplyDeletewhen I read a writing and speak about its content; I always miss something that I want to say about it. It is because I don't know how to explain it in a deep meaning because most of the times its for a certain time; I am pressured. However, when I read and write I can see all the actual meaning of the writing, to stated it in my own writing and then be able to explain with my maximum undertanding of the writing; I read consentrated only in that objentive,"the writing". Reading and writing is helping me get more knowledge with specific facts and not just an over view.

I'm interested in the first citation "Self-Protective Memory", more so than the second one. What questions would you like to explore and answer Sergio? This is good so far but you probably still need to be a little bit more specific.
ReplyDeleteIn my theory I would like to talk about creative writing, why is creative writing important? I believe I have done creative writing on most of my school years. When I was in prep school my teachers wouldn’t really emphasizes on how they wanted an essay or a research paper. So what I would was just make a intro and just start making paragraphs and write what I had in my mind I dint get the greatest grades ever but they were decent enough, so that’s the way that I wrote for the rest of my education until I got to college.. I never found interest in doing the five paragraph essay because I was just to control on what I wanted to say and I just dislike it since then. Creative writing wasn't really what I called it I would just call it “random stuff” but in reality you are creating in your mind what you want to write about. So I’m going to talk about creative writing on how it has helped me with my writing, some of the benefits that it has and what creative writing is and the reason why creative writing is important.

The theory I developed is “why do students procrastinate?”, since I am one of those students who procrastinate. I tend to think that I will find the time before the deadline, when in fact I will find myself up all night sat down looking at my laptop’s screen. I wanted to write about this for the longest time because, in my opinion, I feel that most of the students can relate to this. I chose this since I know that procrastinating affects our learning and writing abilities compared to whereas we would have started a writing assignment ahead of time and with dedication. Procrastination is something I am familiar with, so I am comfortable with writing about such topic, and researching why we tend to do this so much after many times of experiencing the negative effects of doing this.

My way of showing the importance of reading or writing would be by sharing for those who don't know much about the portfolios what the advantages are on having one that makes your writing and reading better. My goal would be to convince people how the portfolios help in a positive way. My question would be Why wouldnt you try to do a portfolio when you have a good amount of benefits? I believe that the portfolios could help us even more because we can look back and see what we made wrong and fix it.

Why write?
ReplyDeleteThis was my first question when I started my English class, I knew that writing was important, but I didn’t realize how important. I was thinking that writing was like a regular class, where you have to learn what your instructor teaches you, study to pass your exams and get a good grade. But I never thought that writing was going to help me a lot with different aspects of daily life. Writing helps you to become a better thinker and learner, to share your experiences, to improve your performance in school, to express yourself better, and it is helping me to improve English.

My question will be; how can the ESL classes be helpful students?
ReplyDeleteThe esl classes had helped students to learn the english which inlcudes the writing and the reading. This classes made students improve in many ways/aspects; for example, giving them the opportunity to comunicate with others and express themselves through the English language, providing them with the freedom of writing and reading whatever they want
In this clases, students feel like in home. they speak their language while learning english. The teachers are like their parents because they are teaching them something new. I choose this, because is the only posible way i could find to show my experiences with the english. Just coming all the way to the begining with my history with the writing and reading.

Why is citing so important? a question a lot of student ask they get into a higher education. Citing has always been a problem to me as I was never taught the right format or any other type. Research papers has been coming up a lot more in college. I have only done three research paper in my school and all of them i would be in a some type of group where i would be partner .up with someone that was taught how to do citing. I found out that there is a lot of different ways of citing that are APA, Chicago, Oxford ,Harvard, MLA, and some other. I would wonder if citing is even necessary, and why is it so important.

Are setting goals important?
ReplyDeleteThis question is a theory I developed along the ways since I was a child. Having many teachers, my parents, my family, etc. always tell me “Michelle always set your goals and follow them one by one, for we want you to have a better life then what we had,” my parents would say. Having that thought in mind In my mind once in a while when I sit and daydream I remember them implying that to me as a child and my teachers always saying “ follow your dreams, which are built up of your goals in life which you can get there eventually if you just do it right.” Having this all to process in my mind as a unforgettable memory I think would be a good way to incorporate it on how they always told me to set my goals was important as it was for my future and how I used it academically throughout my growth till now. I believe my theory could have a great outcome in the way that I believe many not just myself will relate to what I have to argue of setting goals and if they really are important for what I thought my life’s timeframe. Having said academically I will incorporate writing, reading and learning for it is an important issue in this response I will have.

ReplyDeleteWith writing, students have to understand the concept of the topic such, as the authors purpose for writing it. Rhetorical reading is one of the ways a student can also be creative with their writing. I learned this based on my UNIV class here at Pan am and it served a purpose to me because not only does the book from that class makes sense it helps me to better myself in writing. It offers me the skill to being creative and also sometimes play devils advocate because it makes me question the author purpose. In chapter 3 in Academic Transformation it talks about how to become a better reader and i believe that has to do with writing. How are the students supposed to write about an article without finding the author's purpose. Also in the Hass and Flowers article I could really understand the concept of rhetorical reading because i now understood the authors purpose.
What would it happen if there were no creativity in writing? All of the paper would be exactly the same because our creativity is what makes us write all kinds of things, because in text the only limit is your creativity. In art when two artist are asked to make a painting representing what they think about love, one could paint a happy family with bright colors in a perfect world representing love as something good that everyone wants in their life, but the other one may paint a single person with a bleeding heart in dark colors that make you feel depressed when you think about previews bad experience with love. An as well with writing two people can write about the same topic, but have a complete opposite opinion, and still bout of them would be correct about that.
ReplyDeleteAlso creative writing is not just important to make a difference in the ideas of each individual; this is what makes us better writers. According to Andrew Melrose; a person that is a good thinker, is a better writer.

My question is, is writing really that important? Will you really every use it again after you graduate? My theory is to find out if I’ll ever have to use writing after I graduate? Would I use it in my degree? Would I really need it to find a job? Or could I get away with just using informal forms or writing, never needing to cite again, or write a paper of any form. I really want to talk about this topic because I really want to find out if writing is really that necessary? And if it is, which parts are most important, which would I use most of after graduation?

The theory that I have developed is, Why is time management so important? My parents, teachers, and just about everyone has always stressed to me about managing my time. They've always said that if you manage your time wisely you will alwyas get your work done and done well. I'll admit it, I have never managed my time wisely. I always do my work at the last minute or I turn it in late. Reading and Writing require a great deal of time management. You can't read a whole book in one day just like you cant write a 10 page essay in one day also. Both these tasks take time. They need to be done in a step by step process. I beleive by doing this topic I will be able to find out how to manage my time wisely and if it affects our grades positively or negatively.

my question is, will you ever reach a true pinnacle of writing? we take all these classes that developed our writing in hopes to better improve our own writing. does this mean that there is a top place a goal that in the end we will reach with writing? do all of us have to reach the top in order to be successful whatever path we choose? our teachers always tell us we must keep writing to improve, to keep going, but where are we going. does anyone really know. is the top being a best selling author, a teacher, a scholar. i will be looking for what exactly it is we're all striving to reach.

Is reading and writing really as important as teachers say it is? If I don’t like reading I’m not going to go into a field where the main topic is reading. Of course ever thing will involve reading or writing but to a lower extent that this teachers are portraying it to be. Teachers are making it seem that we won’t get anywhere without it. There are many people out there that have a low writing and reading level but have still made it far in life. The great side about reading and writing is that it makes everything easier, you have a much higher chance to get a job in any field. The odds are on your side when you excel in these things.

Why is people afraid of writing?
ReplyDeleteI would like to talk about the fears we have before even we start writing. I always get stuck at the beginning of any writing I do. I always try to think a perfect way to write everything just one time, instead of just letting myself go and then go back to correct. The sad thing is that I never learn the lesson, I always get stuck at the beginning because I don't want to make any mistakes. When I just start writing without thinking if it's correct or not, and just writing my ideas, I finally feel like I'm doing it right. Obviously I come back to fix all the mess, but the ideas are there; They just have to be organized.
